This piece is a prelude written by the early-17th-century Neapolitan music theorist Fabio Colonna for the sambuca lincea, a 31-tone harpsichord or archicembalo designed by Colonna and built by Francesco Beghini. It is a traditional, tonal piece that modulates through the entire circle of 31 fifths, as is possible in the 31-tone tuning.
